What an exciting week it has been in first grade! We have been busy every second of our day. This week we finished up learning about short vowel sounds. We now are able to read and write short a, e, i, o and u words. Each day we compiled a list of words to see if we could brainstorm more than the day before. We have been using our Smart board each day to help us practice these words. On the Smart board we like to do things like sort pictures according to their sounds, fill in missing letters and match words to pictures. Students are able to do this individually and with groups.

In Math we continue to count pennies and nickels. Today we worked on number stories that involved shopping! The girls were thrilled about this but not so much for the boys! :) It was pretend shopping but real Math. We worked on number stories that involved finding change, which cost more, how much 2 items cost together and how much more money you needed to buy items. They did great with this. The kiddos are really catching onto counting money and exchanging pennies for nickels. We have been playing a penny/nickel grab game that helps reinforce the concept of 5 pennies is the same at 1 nickel.
