Happy May Day!  We have enjoyed ourselves in first grade today. In Math we filled out and decorated our May calendars. At the start of each month we do this and it was bittersweet as we completed our last calendar for our first grade school year.  Do no worry...the kids have requested that I make copies of the blank calendar to send home with them over summer vacation! They have promised me that they will fill them out :)  I have such a great class!!

In your son/daughters backpacks tonight you will find an interview for our biography writing project.  Please help them ask and answer questions with any adult in your family. This can be a grandparent, aunt, uncle and of course mom and dad!  I would like to have this interview packet completed and back at school this Thursday so we can begin writing our sloppy copies.

Rock investigation

In Science we continue to investigate different kinds of rocks, what they look like, feel like and how they change when they are in water.  I have a great group of Scientists on my hands!  They attack each experiment with great questions and observations!

We keep plugging away at Reading each and everyday.  I have said it before, but I continue to feel so proud of the efforts each child puts forth while they are here at school. Reading is very hard and has so many components to it.  Keep up all the great work you do with your child at home.  Remember the books that they are bringing home are on their independent level so they should be reading them with very little problems and at a good pace.  If you feel your child is bringing home to hard of a book please write that down on his/her paper.

The month of April was VERY busy with birthdays!  We enjoyed many yummy treats.  It looks like the month of May will be just as busy. I would like to schedule all of the June and July birthdays a special day to celebrate while we are still in school. Some of you have already received emails from me and some of you receive one in the coming days.  It is taking some strategic planning to get these all on their own days...but it will work!!! :)

Its hard to believe the end of the year is so near.  I had posted before about summer journals and this is just a reminder. If you would like your child to have a summer journal to write in I have created some story starters to help guide their writing. If you send a spiral notebook I will work with your son/daughter to put the notebook together.  So far I have a small handful of kids who have brought a notebook and they are very excited to get started writing in it!

Last week in Math we were reviewing counting money and making change.  I made a poster that had some of their favorite foods on it...CANDY! We worked for several days to come up with multiple ways to pay for this candy, how to pay for 2 kinds of candy and how much change we would get back if we paid with a dollar bill. The kids did GREAT with this project and were even able to enjoy a small treat at the end!
Poster of candy, YUM!
