I hope everyone has enjoyed this beautiful weekend!

It was great to spend a whole week with your children this week!  Our school year is off to such a great start and each day is filled with new adventures, laughter and learning.

Jolly Phonics: We continue to move forward EVERYDAY with a new sound. This week we focused on the sounds of: r, m, d and g.  We listened to a story, sang a sound and practiced how to make that letter and sounded out words that use those sounds.  Our "word bank" continues to grow by 5-10 words daily!  To see the excitement on their faces when the sound out and read words like: spend, crest, send, mint and stink is priceless. The amount of confidence they gain from Jolly Phonics is simply amazing.  Please remember to help your son or daughter review ALL the sounds in their sound book each night, not just the sound of the day.

Math: Hard to believe that this week we will be finishing up our first unit!  This week we focused on counting and making tally marks. Most students had seen and work with these before but it was great to review and do more work with. To practice we did several class questions such as: what is your favorite cereal: cheerios, fruit loops or lucky charms. Do you have a: dog, cat, fish or other/no pet? and Do you sisters, brother or no siblings. These questions were great ways to continue to get to know each other as well as practice our tally marks.  Next week we begin talking about thermometers and temperature in both Science and Math.

Reading: Our story this week was called "10 Dogs In The Window."  It was a story that focused on student made predictions and linking similarities and differences between what the dogs looked like and did. We took this weeks story and created a class book about what we knew about dogs.  It was great to hear all the fun and interesting "facts" that we knew. :-)

We also worked on sequencing and order of events in reading.  To help us have a better understanding of this we decided to write out step by step how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  Students quickly realized that there are some small but very important details that you cannot forget about.  Once we had these steps established it was completely necessary to TRY these steps out and actually make a PB&J sandwich for morning snack!  Boy did these kids LOVE that!  They work together in pairs to make their sandwich step by step and enjoyed every minute of eating it!  They loved it so much they asked if we could do it again tomorrow...so we did! Thank you to everyone who sent supplies for this fun snack.

Upcoming Events:
Wednesday, September 12: 2 HR Early Dismissal
Friday, September 14: This is going to be a busy day for us. It is school picture day as well as National Dot Day.  We will be celebrating Dot Day but creating several "dot" creations and making our very own dot t-shirt.  (A big thank you to the committee who put this together and the Parent Boosters for all the supplies).

On the right hand side of this blog there is a place to sign up to be a follower as well as follow by email. Please sign up for both of these. This helps me make sure everyone is receiving our classroom information. Thank you!
