Winter has officially found us!  The last week has been quite cold outside and now we have some snow to add to the fun!  The cold weather policy states that we will go outside as soon as temperatures are above 0.  I was outside for duty today and it was only 3 degrees, it was very cold!!!  With that being said it is EXTREMELY important for your child to come to school each day with the proper winter gear. Coat, snow pants, boots, hats, gloves and scarf.  As you can see by the pictures I posted earlier today the kids LOVED playing in the snow.  When they came inside however, their gloves, coats, snow pants and hats were soaked. I would suggest that everyone send an extra pair of gloves and an extra hat along each day. The kids have to put all of the gear right back on at middle and last recess and they are all usually still wet or damp.  I would also suggest putting an extra pair of socks in your child's backpack. We leave our boots in our locker or on the rug in our room. Sometimes we forget to put our shoes back on before we walk to put our boots away or we step in some snow or the wet carpet and their socks get wet.  Just a few suggestions. :-)  If you are in need of snow pants, coats, boots, hats, gloves, etc. please do not hesitate to contact me. I will help find some for your child.

Grandparents Day
Friday, December 20 is our annual Grandparents Day here at Kalona Elementary.
·      Here is how our (first grade) morning is going to look:
8:30-9:00 Grandparents arrive and are seated in the gym.
9:00-10:00 All school carol sing
10:00-10:15 Recess/ cookies and coffee served in the gym
10:15-11:00 Grandparents are welcome to visit our classroom and     help with a holiday craft.  (Please feel free to visit other grandchildren in the building.)

Grandparent/s Day ends at 11:00. IF students are going home with their grandparent they will need to be signed out by that grandparent in our classroom.  In order for them to go home with their grandparent we need to have PRIOR permission from you.

**You will find a pink sheet of paper in your child's backpack tonight with a note that looks similar to what is above. Please fill out the bottom portion and return it when you know what the plan is for your child and grandparent on Grandparents Day.  If you have any questions again feel free to write a note, send an email mstumpf@mphawks.org or call me here at the school 656-2243.

Christmas Around The World:  If you look carefully at the pictures I posted earlier you will see a picture or two of the kiddos waving good-bye to you!  This week we have taken 2 "airplane" rides to help us learn about how different countries celebrate Christmas. Yesterday we traveled to Holland and today we went to Israel.  Be sure and ask your child to tell you one fact that they learned about Christmas in another country.
