Here we are in the midst of yet another crazy week! 3 more early outs and only 2 full days! Will we ever get a full week of first grade?  With such a crazy schedule we are doing our best to move forward with our curriculum.  We still seem to be flying through our Jolly Phonics review. We have completed our review of the 44 sounds and are moving onto bigger and better. ;-)  We have started our review of tricky words this week. Your child should be bringing home a baggie with word cards in it each night. Please send these bags back to school each day as we use them throughout the day.  Please take a few minutes each night to help your child read through their words. This shouldn't take too long. Tricky words have all been introduced to the kiddos in kindergarten.  These words are also not words they should sound out. We review to them as being tricky for that reason. In the end we want kids to be able to look at a word and read it within 3 seconds.

Also coming home...Writing homework has begun. Please help your child write his/her list of 10 words each night in the back of the sound book. They only need to write the words 1 time. If they miss a word, go over it with them and show them the correct way to spell it. These lists are to help the kids realize spelling patterns and to learn to identify when a word is misspelled.  If you have any questions about this please feel free to send me an email.

Math homework has also been coming home. Do the best you can to help your son/daughter to complete their homework and return it to school the next day or two. The math homework is geared to help them practice the skill taught at school. We encourage you to read the directions and explain to them what they are doing but we (first grade teachers) really want to see what they can do on their own. Homework does not receive a "grade" but is looked at to check the progress of students.

Picture day is THIS FRIDAY!! Send your kiddos to school with their brightest smiles. I do not know what time we will get our pictures taken, I cannot promise that it will be before recess.
