Book-It Program- This will start on Tuesday, October 1st. Check your child's backpack for their monthly calendar. Reminder: we are asking that all first graders read 20 minutes Monday-Friday. This will equal out to be 400 minutes read each month. If you happen to read 40 minutes in one night, please only have your child mark 1 day on the calendar vs. 2. Book-It runs from October-March. At the end of each month return your child's calendar (signed by you and your child) and receive a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. Want more of a challenge for your child? Remind them that if they read 20 minutes Sunday-Saturday and fill in everyday on the calendar they get to pick a prize from our prize box at school.
Book Cart- Starting next week your child will be bringing home a book to read at home. This book (if you remember from our Parent Meeting) is going to be a book at their independent level. This level of book is something that they will be able to read independently/by themselves without help. This is to work on fluency, accuracy and to build confidence in each child and their reading ability. Please encourage your child to read this book multiple times in a night. After they are done reading I encourage you to ask them questions. Questions such as: Who are the characters? Was there a problem in the story? What was the problem? How did they solve the problem? Starting out we will be checking out books on Monday-Wednesday-Friday. You can keep these books at home for 2 nights. As the year goes on we may switch to checking out daily. Please help your child remember to bring back their books on Mondays-Wednesdays and Fridays.
